Century English Coffee "Can" Mug. In an exemplary "Imari" style pattern. Perhaps over 200 years old, this Coffee Can style porcelain mug might be the most brilliantly designed example of this style.Designed in deep cobalt blue and tomato red, and accentuated by gold gilt, this cup takes inspiration from the popular Japanese Imari style. Wicked, twisted branches, leaves, and twigs frenetically zig and zag, following a pattern akin to an overgrown hedgerow or bramble. The delicate handle, which features a comfortable notch at the bottom, has a lovely hand-painted gold gilt vining pattern along the rib. The beautiful white porcelain is without flaw, allowing the observer to be transfixed and absorbed in the masterful pattern! It is likely made by an exceptional pottery house in either France or England around the early- to mid-1800s. This mug is in NEAR MINT condition! It is likely that this mug was not used for service. Only the slightest amount of wear to the gold gilt can be seen under close inspection. There are no other flaws, damages, repairs, or crazing. This is an exceptional, museum-quality piece. Height: 2.5 in (6.4 cm) Mouth diameter: 2.75 in (7 cm) Width with handle: 3.75 in (8.9 cm).
