Offered is a set of six matching. Zeisel was a Hungarian born American Industrial designer. Born into a highly educated and assimilated Jewish family, she originally studied painting at the Hungarian Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Early in these studies she turned to ceramics as a means of supporting her work as a painter. She was hired as the designer for Schramberger Majolikafabrik in Germany in 1928.
Please review the Wikipedia page dedicated to her. Several books have been published in the last decade chronicling her career of over eighty years in industrial design. Zeisel herself simply said she "was the maker of useful things". The cups and saucers are in very good condition. Each cup and saucer is hand painted.
One cup has a crack, most likely from extreme hot water (please examine photo detail). Each of the cups has areas of missing glaze on the bottoms- most piece have three, which makes me wonder if they were fired on boats. In addition one has 3/8 area of missing glaze. It does not appear to be a chip. Three of the saucers have pin head sized chips to the glaze on the saucer edge. There are small bits of clay and firing blisters on the undersides. Please examine photo details closely. Each piece is marked "SMF" within a shield and "Majolika Schramberg Handgemalt" with the number 57- perhaps referring to the pattern. Each saucer is 6 5/8" in diameter and approximately 1/2" tall, each cup is 3 5/8" in diameter (rim to rim) and 4" wide with handle and 1 3/4 tall. Zeisels work is in the permanent collections of the. Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC. New York Historical Society, NYC. Museum of Modern Art, NYC.Victoria and Albert Museum, London. As well as museums in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Milwaukee among others. Zeisel has received numerous awards from the design field including awards from the Cooper-Hewett National Design Museum, the Hungarian government (twice), Pratt Institute, Alfred University, Royal Society of Industrial Designers, Parsons, RISD, the Royal College of Art and the Hungarian University of the Arts.
