Lovely Victorian era white soft paste porcelain set of 4 tea cups, 4 saucers, 4 plates, a sugar bowl, and a creamer. Sprigged with lavender appliqués of thistles, bluebells, and shamrocks. Gold trim is painted on all pieces-which is rare. Squared handles with scrolls on tea cups (unusual, not Adderley, as seen on Glasgow Nautilus and Alcock tea cups).
Gold sun detail on top of creamer handle. Gold details on top of the sugar bowl. Sugar bowl is marked with a large, raised C or G on the bottom. Both the creamer and the sugar bowl are numbered on bottom 891 (still in red on the creamer, faded on the bowl). Most likely made in the Staffordshire region of England in the early to mid 19th century, but possibly made in Glasgow, Scotland, in the 1840s or 1850s.Pattern is similar to Adderley's Blue Chelsea, but with thistles, shamrocks, and bluebells and the gold trim. This genre of lavender embossed pattern is sometimes called Grandmother Ware or Blue Chelsea Ware. Incredible example of English or Scottish??
Light shines through all dishes, nearly like milk glass. Some of the sprigs show imperfections in the firing process, including one sprig curled off slightly and many (but not all) crackled through the pattern under the glaze.
Tea cups measure 2.5 H x 4.5 W x 3.74 diameter inches. Saucers measure 4.74 diameter x 1.75 H inches. Dishes measure 6.5 diameter x 1 H inches. The creamer measures 5.5 H x 5 W x 4.5 D inches. The sugar bowl measures 4.75 H x 7 W x 6.5 D inches. In good to fair condition. Has only belonged to one family. Some wear to gold trim and sprigs on all pieces from use. Creamer has a 1.25 inch long crack down one side, some yellowing on handle side from being too close to a heat source at some point, and a 1 inch diameter black spot on one side of the base. One cup has a 1/4 inch crack on a top edge and darkening behind a thistle embossing that partially curled away in the original firing process (on the same cup).
Plates and saucers are worn and have a couple of chips. One plate has two 1/8 wide cracks. The sugar bowl has a 1/4 stain on the interior bottom and a dark closed crack on the interior rim.
